Exploring and Supporting Social Work Students' Experiences With Groups Chats: An Interactive Workshop

Technologies are integral to higher education, yet little is known about social work students’ utilization of electronic communications and its impact on education. This interactive workshop shares results from a qualitative study exploring their utilization of group chats, providing attendees opportunities to develop strategies supporting students’ engagement in these interactions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss how group chats may influence their social work students’ educational, professional, and personal experiences.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify pros and cons associated with group chats, informed by study findings and activities from this workshop, so that they can anticipate and respond to issues that may arise related to their students’ engagement in group chats.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to develop guidelines for instructors and administrators to support benefits and mitigate harms associated with social work students’ group chat communications, such as the specification of departmental policies and language in syllabi that address these issues.
