Professional and Personal Identities of Christians Who Practice Social Work

Social workers struggle to integrate faith, religion, and spirituality into practice, and the field questions how religious social workers ethically practice due to misconceptions and limited research. Social workers identifying as religious provided insight into their experiences of simultaneously maintaining the NASW Code of Ethics and their own belief systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss the differences between deontological and teleological systems.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe how social workers who identify as Christian have integrated their religious beliefs with their professional identity while maintaining the NASW Code of Ethics.
  3. Upon completion, participants will demonstrate an understanding of identity integration and the importance of including religion and spirituality in social work practice to benefit and empower clients.
