Integrating African and Native American Indigenous Knowledge Systems for Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

Restorative dialogue approaches anchored in the African indigenous philosophy of Ubuntu and the Seventh-Generation Principle from the Native American were combined to facilitate conflict resolution and peacebuilding dialogues in the Nyanza region of Kenya Africa. This session will discuss how presenters infused these philosophies to facilitate dialogue addressing community-related conflicts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon the completion of this presentation, participants will gain an in-depth understanding of African restorative dialogue approaches and the underlying principles of the Ubuntu Philosophy and how it can be utilized for peacebuilding and conflict resolution
  2. Upon the completion of this presentation, participants will gain an understanding of the Seven Generation Principles from Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) philosophy as a framework for making personal, political or professional choices and decisions
  3. Upon the completion of this presentation, participants will grapple with how these concepts and philosophies can be skillfully adapted in building peaceful co-existence among communities around the world as well how such indigenous concepts and knowledge can be integrated into social work curriculum and teaching practices.
