Parental Incarceration in African American Students: Effects of SES, Education, and Juvenile Justice Involvement

This presentation will examine the effects of parental incarceration on socioeconomics, educational outcomes, school exclusion, and juvenile justice involvement in a sample of adolescent African American students. The results of this study will inform the use of three different therapeutic and community programs that address this type of trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe the stakeholders involved in addressing parental incarceration.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to explain the risk factors associated with parental incarceration in African American students.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to accurately describe and identify the school administrators and educators’ responsibility for this at-risk population.
