Session: Improving Clinical Practice for Suicide Prevention Care

A Trauma-Informed Approach to Suicide: Implications for Social Work Educators

This presentation will explore clinicians’ (N=30) operationalization of a trauma-informed approach to working with clients with suicidal thoughts and behaviors as well as the barriers encountered when doing trauma-informed work with this population. Implications for practicing social workers, schools of social work, and professional organizations are discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to operationalize the TIA approach to suicide described by clinicians who were research participants in the study
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to name three barriers to a TIA to suicide
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify three action steps to strengthen clinicians' ability to use a TIA to work with individuals with suicidal thoughts and behaviors
