Overdose mortality exceeds 100,000 Americans annually yet micro and macro level stigma to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) remains a significant barrier to accessing care, particularly in rural communities. Social work education can prepare students to identify and address stigma and ensure their communities have access to standardized care.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the unique aspects of stigma related to medication assisted treatment, along the micro-macro continuum.
Articulate the need for social work practitioners to address the barrier that stigma presents related to MOUD.
Describe ways in which social work education can prepare future practitioners to challenge and mitigate stigma across systemic levels.
