This session examines social worker training in treating young children with suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). Current gaps in social work training and knowledge will be identified and discussed, followed by recommendations to ensure future social workers are equipped to provide effective assessment and treatment of young children with STB.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize the current prevalence of and factors associated with early childhood suicidal thoughts and behaviors, as well as considerations of race, gender, and environment among children endorsing these symptoms.
Identify training gaps identified by current research and consider how these gaps may show up in their social work training programs.
Consider avenues for integrating training on young children with suicidal thoughts and behaviors into current social work curriculum.
