"Decolonizing" Social Work Education: Opportunities and Lessons From a Journal Special Issue

Opportunities and limitations faced in creating a special issue in a peer reviewed journal on decolonizing social work practice is presented. We present a theoretical framework grounding the conceptualization of “decolonizing” and liberating social work education and practice in its application to social work curriculum, teaching, practice, and scholarship.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss efforts and challenges in the publication process through a “decolonizing” praxis that challenges common publication practices (e.g., using an open review process) to expand the expression of a broad range of voices, practices, and educational processes grounded in indigenous ways of knowing.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate a conceptual framework to inform a distinct understanding of the constructs of colonialism, decolonizing, uncolonizing, coloniality and decoloniality and the relevance to liberating social work education.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe curricular approaches (course/practicum) that critically examine the assumptions and values of the profession, and recognizes, restores and re-centers indigenous knowledges and cultural practices.
